Mike,

Sorry to beat a dead horse, BUT--

When a recording company transfers music from, say, a 78rpm, acoustic or electric, to a CD, what file format does it actually transfer?

Recording companies do what they please. The straightforward way is to digitize at 44.1, 16 WAV; then to edit the WAV; then to record directly. In general, that's what I do as a serious amateur. However, they may record with more than 16-bit depth so that they can edit freely without losing bits when ultimately converting to 16 bits. They may digitize at more than 44.1 ksps - though as far as I can tell there's no advantage to the downsampling that has to follow.

All of the above is for digitizing any analogue source headed only for CD-DA. The difference between source formats (e.g., 78, master tape) is in the editing.

Now, one more time: Whatever file format ends the process, it is written to CD-DA by the disc mastering program. It seems to me inevitable and advisable that that last file is in redbook format.
