This is ONLY true for "multi-track" recordings, such as LP's or
45rpm EP's (or CD's usually anthologies or artist-specific
restrospective collections).

For LP's (etc.) it depends on the policies of the record company.
Some companies assigned separate matrix numbers to each song...
particularly when they were recorded (or final-mixed, in this
current era) on different dates and/or in different places.
Other companies/labels assigned a "matrix number" to the final
"matrix" used to manufature the LP/45 discs ...this is actually
technically correct. And...a lot used BOTH methods...assigning
an internal number to each track, and an actual "matrix number"
to the disc which would be issued. If a number appears on the
label, it is most likely to be the latter...
