Well, back in my youth of AM mono car radios, they tinkered with speed
rather than volume...the whole idea was to play records 5% or so fast,
leaving more time for (profitable) commercials...

Extra time wasn't the issue -- they could have accomplished the same thing by playing one less record per hour. But when a station increased the speed, it also sped up the tempo, which meant that the same record on the competing station would sound slower. The program directors hoped that their listeners would think "everything sounds better on KLUNK than it does on KRUD."
