Hey John,

Speed did indeed mean faster tempo, but the extra time did mean "more hits, more often"
not to mention more spots. As the venerable Hudson and Harrigan on KILT in Houston used to parady the station GM who said "Give me commercials, a thousand a day, I don't care as long as they pay."

Extra time wasn't the issue -- they could have accomplished the same thing by playing one less record per hour. But when a station increased the speed, it also sped up the tempo, which meant that the same record on the competing station would sound slower. The program directors hoped that their listeners would think "everything sounds better on KLUNK than it does on KRUD."
