Meet at SAM staff entrance (2nd Avenue near University Street). Ferry departs from downtown Seattle at 8:30 am. Angels will return to Seattle on 4:20 pm ferry. Lunch will be provided. Transit and workspace limits mean that we are restricting the Angels project to the first 12 attendees to apply.

Preserving our human heritage: how curating and conserving Kennewick Man has influenced the care of human remains in cultural institutions

Informal reception and behind the scenes tours will take place at the Burke museum from 5:30pm for WAAC members and spouses.

Presentation commences at 7:00 pm

We are very pleased to partner with the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture to welcome attendees to a keynote presentation and Burke Museum staff. The discussion will provide an illuminating account of how conservation and curatorial issues surrounding Kennewick Man, also known as the Ancient One, have been instrumental in compelling our field to reevaluate our approach to caring for human remains in collections. The talk will be preceded by behind the scenes tours of the Burke Museum and an informal reception for WAAC members and spouses only. The discussion at 7pm will be open to the public and promises to be popular, so please sign up promptly when the registration package arrives.

In case you are wondering, please note that Kennewick Man will not be viewed during the behind the scenes tours!

Public buses from downtown (MT 72,73,74) depart every 10-15 minutes from Bay A in the University Street bus tunnel (enter at 2nd Ave/University St.) and trips to the University of Washington take about 20 minutes).

The conference venue on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday morning is the Nordstrom Lecture Hall on the ground floor of the Seattle Art Museum. Enter at the staff entrance on Second Avenue near University Street and staff will show you to the lecture hall.

We are delighted to welcome all conference attendees to a reception at the Wright Exhibition Space to open a special exhibition of California Minimalism and Light and Space artists, bringing together works from local collections and conservation material generated by the Getty Conservation Institute for Pacific Standard Time.

Virginia Wright and her late husband, Bagley, became known and loved in the community for being the preeminent pioneer contemporary art collectors in Seattle and the exhibition showcases their stunning collection along with works from the Seattle Art Museum and other collections. At the center of this exhibition is a collaboration with the Getty Conservation Institute and the Seattle Art Museum to resurrect the GCI's Pacific Standard Time exhibition about artist De Wain Valentine, From Start to Finish: De Wain Valentine's Gray Column. Valentine's stunning sculpture, Gray Column, will be on display along with much of the conservation research developed for the GCI show. The film that accompanied the show will be screened on Friday afternoon at the downtown SAM venue and we hope that the artist and curators may make an appearance.

The Dexter gallery is a short bus ride from downtown and directions will be provided. Exhibition, drinks and hors d'oevre are included in the conference registration.

The WAAC banquet will take place on Thursday, September 19, 2013 at the Seattle Art Museum's Olympic Sculpture Park pavilion. With great views of the museum's spectacular modern and contemporary sculpture collection, (including important works by Serra, di Suvero, Oldenburg and Calder), award-winning architectural/park design by Weiss/Manfredi Architects, and a stunning panorama across Puget Sound to the Olympic Mountain Range (not to mention scintillating company, scrumptious nourishment and local, refreshing beverages). To whet your appetite, the banquet will be preceded by tours of the sculpture park, led by the SAM conservation staff.
