Description of Duties and Responsibilities
The position is located in Library Operations, Public Services Division, Preservation and Collection Management Section (PCM), Collection Management Unit (CMU).  The function of PCM is to direct the implementation of and provide a focal point for the National Library of Medicine’s preservation and collection management programs.  This includes planning, budgeting, staffing, coordination and evaluation of both in-house and contract activities related to the preservation and management of NLM’s collections; development of cooperative preservation programs with other national, biomedical, and research libraries; evaluating new preservation technologies; training staff and users in careful handling of materials; consultation with other biomedical libraries regarding preservation issues and methods; and recommending needed research to NLM senior management for approval.  The incumbent serves as a librarian in the Collection Management Unit.  The Unit is responsible for collection management functions that include binding, book repair, shelving, collection security, and space management.  The incumbent assists the Unit Head in all matters related to management of a collection of approximately 7,500,000 items.  Serves as Project Officer or Alternate Project Officer for the NLM binding preparation, binding, and shelving contracts.  Serves as a backup to the Director of Disaster Recovery.  Has experience with integrated library systems (ILS) and bibliographic, holdings and item record.  Possesses  in-depth knowledge of serials and is able to recognize bibliographic problems and resolve all but the most complicated bibliographic problems related to serial publications.  Plans, organizes and carries to completion major projects designed to preserve collection materials in a variety of formats including audiovisual and electronic resources in a timely manner.  Ensures that the Library’s book repair and conservation labs are equipped with all necessary supplies and equipment and performs quality reviews collection items that received repair treatments from book repair staff.  Trains, coordinates, and reviews the work of CMU library technicians and student assistants, including their ILS work.  Offers training sessions on care and handling of library materials to Library staff.
