Applauded and financed.
There are three distinct problems involved:
Preservation
Dissemination
Amelioration
It seems that the 3D scanning does an excellent job of preserving the
exact shape of the groove. The files can then be disseminated to various
research groups who can work on the amelioration of the many defects of
early recordings.
At this stage, I think if they can get sound as good as Ward Marston
gets, but without any physical contact with the groove, that is a big
advantage in preservation.
People can then spend the next few decades researching things like
resonant frequencies in horns. The priority now is to get good files to
work on, before the rare originals get damaged.
