You can add VCR based digital recordings to the same list along with
virtually all tape drives. Even hard disks are starting to look at their
solid state replacements. All of this stuff is far too expensive to
manufacture audio only sized quantities of.

It's the Achilles heel of all digital media. Anything that doesn't migrate
away from obsolete media soon enough becomes  useless. DAT only had a ten
year run of serious use and the tapes remain subject to the self-erasure
time bomb.
