If by "operational tradeoffs" you mean inept and tin-eared "engineering," yes for sure.

Here's another example. Some of the tape hiss reduction tools are great when used very 
conservatively, but the tendancy is to overuse and thus create digital artifacts where noise was 
(see the recent CD reissue of Ray Barretto "Acid") or suck all the air and space from around the 
music (see numerous -- numerous -- examples from the day Sonic Solutions hit the market onward). 
But, used properly, these tools can polish and clarify the music by reducing the noise haze without 
sucking the air and space away.
