Re: [ARSCLIST] Ampex 456 - tip of the iceberg...chemistry

Hi, Lou,

Keep wondering!

I'm not sure the Shamrock/Melody/White Box/etc helps much as it is so variable -- it could be anything. I think we'll learn more sticking with "name brand" tapes - they present enough of a challenge as it is.

I'm not saying nothing can be learned from seconds, but I can think of all the variables. I was talking with someone today in the early stages of the freezing experiment and the variables just keep piling up.

I gave away my Gilbert Chemistry Set many years ago, but I'd love to have an FT-IR machine and a gas chromatagraph. ... and the skill to drive them.

Cheers,

Richard

Thanks very much for this considered postin, Richard. In the late 70s we were using Shamrock 7" castoffs, and it seemed that some of it was backcoated and some was not, as a manufacturing defect as the oxide looked ad performed the same to our untrained ears. Would it be helpful if I could ghet some samples like this? I'm not sure I can, and not assurance that it was a similar batch if so, but it has me wondering...

We can create a hypothesis that back-coating in contact with binder has a catalytic effect on the degradation of the binder.
