Re: [ARSCLIST] Incredible savings on DC6 for this week only

The digi-EQ in DC6 is not that accurate in terms of RIAA accuracy. The
makers of DC6 will insist that 0.5 dB error is not a big deal - and for
78s that's probably true. But for RIAA LP/microgroove and even NAB
acetates, that 0.5 dB does make a very audible difference to me.

The challenge for any digital EQ is that the number of digital filters
required to reproduce the EQ accurately will also potentially add
digital artifacts. How to balance accuracy versus digital artifacts?

I use the digi-EQ in a Cube-Tec Audiocube - but that's a 64-bit native
system, which is how they address the accuracy versus artifact problem.
The digi-EQ in the Cube-Tec also builds it's EQ curves using the exact
LC filter equations for bass turnover and treble roll-off - no need to
tweak a multiband equalizer to approximate the EQ curve.

Then, of course, there's the whole issue of phono preamp "color" - what
some refer to as "bloom". You won't get that from a digital EQ.

I also run an analog loop for some projects - DA out -> analog phono
preamp -> AD in, in order to get the sound I want.

The right way to half-speed transfer a 78 is definitely FLAT transfer,
then speed adjust, and then finally add EQ.

They have the same special on their website, for the download-only version
(no book/no CD/no box), which is fine. But then when you try to buy it, the
$199 price comes up. I e-mailed and will report back if there's an
open-sesame that's not documented.

Richard, good tip on Tracertek. They have an interesting website. One thing
in particular piqued my curiosity -- they sell flat phono preamps (which
are, in effect, high-impedence unbalanced mic preamps) and suggest that
"it's not 1975 anymore" and the "modern" way to transfer records is flat and
then use DC6 for the RIAA EQ or whatever other EQ one desires. This got me
to wondering -- do any of you do it this way? Since there will be such a
stringent EQ curve applied, what sort of peak-levels do you want from a flat
preamp to avoid digital clipping when the EQ is applied? I can see how,
theoretically, a Digi-EQ could be more accurate than an analog phono preamp,
but I've got a couple that sound just fine. However, I can see how this
could be super-useful for pre-RIAA mono LPs and particularly 78's and
transcriptions. Heck, I bet it would be really super-useful for half-speed
transfer of 78's.
