Earlier in this conversation I mentioned the "Creative Commons" - a project 
working to create alternatives to full copyright, actually creating a 
continuum between "all rights reserved" (copyright) and "no rights 
reserved" (public domain). Those who are interested might like to look at 
their website, especially the '"learn more" page:

I recommend the 2 comics that explain "a spectrum of rights" and "how it 
works". Too late for most works in the past, but if we can get 
artists/performers to consider agreements like this, either after the fact 
of having made a recording or looking to the future - we might be in a 
better position to create access to cultural treasures.
