Do you mean that you are rewinding at fast speed? That will always give bad results. You need to turn the tape over and rewind at playing speed, if the tape plays in only one direction.
(Many tapes have recordings in both directions.)
In general, it is wise to store tapes "tails out" so that playback is intitiated by 'rewinding' the tape. Not only does that ensure that tapes recorded in one direction will not be stored under tension, it also gives you the opportunity to reduce print-through by letting the tape rest a bit between rewind and playback.
