One of the first practical digital formats, D2 is a 3/4" tape that is a composite digital recording. Its intended use was spot tapes for ENG. Because the inputs and outputs are analog (the digitization occurs inside the recorder) the machine can be used in analog-based studios with out requiring expensive modification of the facility.
