As a follow-up to Mary's suggestions, I checked out a recent posting to the
Cons Distlist concerning soluble nylon. Chris Wood of the Dorset Archives
Service suggested that soluble nylon could be removed from paper using hot
alcohol or alcohol in association with heat (06-15-2001). C.V. Horie's
Materials for Conservation also lists a number of chemicals that apparently
dissolve soluble nylon: phenol, formic acid, 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropanol, and
1,3-dichloropropan-2-ol (p. 122). At least these may give you a starting
point.
