[frameconnews] Re: Tapes -Reply

Starches are polysacchrides, chains of glucose molecules which
usually have thousands of units. When these chains are shortened
the starch is often described as "modified". Dextrin is one form
of modified starch. Adhesives of this sort are found on many stamps
and on some linen tapes. The shorter glucose chains seem to have
greater penetrating power, and thus greater adhesion than unmodified
starch. This can make them extremely difficult to remove and many
may have a low pH. Any starch adhesive which is described as
"modified" should be regarded as different from the vegetable
starch used in hinging, and a conservator should be consulted
as to the advisability of its use.
