[frameconnews] Re: Tapes

For many years (since the 1960s) paper conservators in the U.S. and
elsewhere have been concerned about damage done to works of art on paper
due to inappropriate framing practices. Usually these practices were the
result of ignorance on the part of framers. Over the years there have been
several good publications by conservators on conservation framing
techniques. All of these advocate use of a starch based paste and Japanese
paper for hinging. These articles also give good reasons why commercial
self-stick tapes must be avoided.

Of the current publications, I am taking the liberty of recommending two
leaflets I wrote for the preservation series produced by my employer, the
Northeast Document Conservation Center in Andover, Massachusetts. I
recommend these because they are comprehensive and have just been updated.
Also they are readily available at our web site, www.nedcc.org. The titles
are "Matting and Framing for Art and Artifacts on Paper" and "How To Do
Your Own Matting and Hinging". Anyone without access to the Internet can
receive a free copy of either or both by contacting me or our field service
office at the address or telephone number at the end of this message.

I also want to give credit to the Professional Picture Framers Association
(PPFA), which gives seminars throughout the U.S. that teach conservation
framing techniques. Also recommended are the articles by Will Phibbs, the
preparator at the National Gallery in Washington, which appear regularly in
Picture Framing Magazine.
