I'm not a conservator, so I don't see my own opinion as noteworthy.
We, though, do use both methods at our shop. the variables used in
making the decision seem to be:
1 - speed
2 - value of object
3 - ease of use
4 - customer's wishes
5 - our own concern for the value of the item
6 - type of object
7 - weight & strength of paper
8 - economy
9 - intuition
10- insight
The above order is completely flexible.
Thanks for reminding us of this list and for bringing up a topic which
is worthy of discussion.
