BAPNET MEETING 5/9/96: MINUTES

Location: Foothill College

Present:
Richard Boyden, National Archives & Records Administration
Janice Braun, Mills College
Dave Gaynon, Lawrence Livermore (ARMA)
Pamela Heiman, UC Berkeley (Intern)
Lynn Jones, UC Berkeley

Marilyn McDonald, Foothill-DeAnza Community College District
Karen Mokrzycki, UC Santa Cruz
Loren Pignioco, Sun Microsystems
Charles Varnes, UC Berkeley (Intern)

The meeting was called to order by RB.

The fall program (San Jose fire demonstration) was discussed and will be
announced at the June 7 symposium. Another program, which would probably
take place in the Spring of 1997, consisting of recovery of multi-media
(e.g., photographs, digital media, etc.) was discussed, with the
possible participation/sponsorship of the private sector.

The mutual response network and LSCA grant application were discussed.
Paul Wakeford is following up on letters of support. There was a
suggestion to form a committee (5 people) to develop the network and
grant. The grant, which will include funds for supplies, training, and
perhaps a student employee, may require matching funds to show
institutional commitment. A sliding scale for contributions was
suggested. Priorities were discussed, in the event of a catastrophic
disaster. Mutual response would be more effective in the event of a
disaster with an uneven regional consequence. Even a large institution
or private company could benefit from a mutual response network if they
were more heavily damaged and needed a lot of help. Two aspects of the
network mentioned were up-to-date agreements with cold storage
facilities and the organization of volunteers.

Plans for the June 7, 1996 Contra Costa Fire Symposium were finalized.
Individual responsibilities are as follows--LJ: badges; LJ/JB:
registration; KO: lunch ticket/receipt; PH/CV: selected handouts; RB:
photocopying; RB: evaluation form. RB, JB, and PH will meet at the
Oakland Federal Building on 5/19 to assess logistics. RB reported that
the slides were being reprocessed ($300 for 5 copies); NARA and Contra
Costa Risk Management will each buy a copy. MM reported that a no
interest/no fees bank account has been established through Foothill
College. It was agreed that there would be no refunds for the Symposium.
It was suggested that there be more do more outreach and publicity in
terms of other organizations (e.g., SLA, ARMA). To this end, MM and LP
will form a Publicity Committee.

The June 7 Symposium will be the next meeting of BAPNet.
