Sorry for the late post.
Maxell manufactures a "Professional Use Only" product called CL-S which is
applied to the tape transport AFTER normal cleaning, using a fresh swab or
Texwipe. It applies a very thin film of a very hard substance, fluoride)
which
can probably subsitutes for the missing or evaporated tape lubricant.
Because
it is a PFC (perfluorocarbon) rather than a CFC (chlorofluorocarbon) based
solution, it is considered an environmentally friendly product by the EPA.
Magnetic tape lubricant is usually one of the proprietary ingredients
included
in the coating mixture and some are obviously vastly better than others.
