The seminal paper was Stodowlski's *The standardization of monaural
phase,*IEEE Transactions on Audio and Electroacoustics, Vol. AU18,
September 1970,
pp. 288-299.

In that paper he experimentally determined that incorrect polarity was
comparable to 11.5% IM distortion!
