That seems quite likely for some artists in some fields, but there are classical music labels which explicitly prohibit broadcast - or did in the LP era.

My original reaction to this is that it was a non-USA thing. With CBC the artist gets paid every time a selection is broadcast -- at least that is my understanding of how it was a few years ago.


I recall seeing many albums from the UK "not cleared for radio airplay" or something like that.
