I suppose when I'd conjured this idea for the topic I was thinking mostly of Hit of the Week records and later promotional paper laminate records like the ubiquitous Mad Magazine inserts and the "desirable" (in some tiny corner of the universe) Vox Wah Wah commercial.  Obviously the format's history goes much deeper and wider.
