Funny thing, with a cylinder phonograph or flat disc gramophone, all you needed to operate it was your hand on the crank, or to wind the spring motor.  Then the electric turntables required electricity, which has been around awhile.  Then tapedecks needed tape of various media, some of them more durable than others, as well as rubber parts which DO wear out and are frequently difficult to find replacements for.  Now comes the CD disc, and that requires a drive that needs a  laser beam, first to record it and then to replay it.  What will we think of next?
