Philips and Sony co-invented audio CD technology and published its standard
in 1980.

BTW, audio CDs and data CDs are historically different. The standard for the
audio CD was published in June 1980, more than a year before the IBM PC was
announced.

The creation/invention of a data CD was (opportunistically) derived from the
audio CD, which came before.
