----- Peter Martland's dissertation from 1992 was called "A Business History
of The Gramophone Company Ltd. 1897-1918", so it does not at all cover the
merger that formed Electrical and Musical Industries Ltd.

As usual, the wheeling and dealing that went on behind the scenes has not yet
been told, but one thing must be regarded as a tremendous boon to recorded
sound: the EMI Archives eventually obtained all the surviving Columbia
matrices, including those that this company had obtained from Fonotipia and
Odeon (and thereby also those that the International Talking Machine Company
had from e.g. Homokord). It is this that has enabled first the old 1970s
series of Historic Masters and also the present organization to find such
material for reissue on silent vinyl, even though it was originally created
in competition with the Gramophone Company.

Kind regards,

George
