People at Dolby tell me they reached the same conclusion, which is one reason they stay in the hardware business. There is incredible demand for a plug-in decoder, so if they could pull one off to their satisfaction it would be in-market.

Take into account that really good emulation people like the Bomb Factory guys have studied this and not opened the can of worms.

I once took a look at the math involved. Accurate - not to say adjustable - Dolby compensation is remarkably difficult in software. Like stereo/binaural conversion the algoithm is cumbersome and elusive.
