But USE AN ELLIPTICAL STYLUS.  The Edison folks figured this out a long time ago....It's a wonder that some users of the Archeophone persist in bouncing off the mountain tops while never hitting the bottom.  Two minute moulded "pressed" black wax CAN and DO sound just as good or better than four minute blue amberols if played correctly.

  The Archeophone is the best way to play back cylinders. It's the Rolls Royce of cylinder playback machines. Playing back a cylinder, using any other method is amateur night at best. Recording from a horn! You got to be kidding. Besides the Archeophone is very gentle on these old relics. Can't say that about the original machines. Sorry Edison.
