Re: [ARSCLIST] speaking of turntables ...

Hi Steve:

Maybe this is a good step up for 3-speed compatibility:
http://www.kabusa.com/BDT2600.HTM

Seems like a good bit of added value for $100 more. The Vestex turntables are allegedly made in Japan, which is a selling point for me. I would bet everything Numark is made in China.

The wide range of speeds is also appealing about the Vestex, plus the facility of the built-in preamp when needed.

I use three of these tables for casual listening. Perhaps it's old age but, measuremnts to the contrary, I hear some instability (cheesy internal parts) and passable but could-be-better tracking in the off-the-shelf models..

Hi Doug:

Thank you very much for passing that info along. I have dealt with KAB buying replacement stylii and can recommend him.

If I had someone show up with a rare wide-groove laquer, or a minty Edison disk, or a metal part, I'd of course send them to Shiffy or you. But for my own small pile of 78's (some in very good condition, most not so much, especially after a few rounds playing show-off fodder for my Victrola), do you think this unit is enough:
http://www.kabusa.com/tt200.htm
I don't want to invest very heavily in 78's but I do have a few I'd like to get transferred and once in a while someone shows up at the studio with an old home-brewed disk or two. I even have a few of those from long-dead relatives.

I think the way I'd approach 78's is transfer flat and do EQ in the software, making full use of the proper NR tools.

As for LPs, the Thorens turntables are indeed impressive. However, at those prices I might be more inclined to look at a VPI Scout or a super-hotrodded Technics 1200. One concern I had about the Technics is rumble. Have they figured out a fix to the age-old direct-drive rumble problem?

In addition to the modified Technics tables sold by KAB (www.kabusa.com),
there are two models of belt-drive, 3-speed tables made byThorenz. Here's info from the USA distributor (I would question whether the optional built-in preamp has bypassable RIAA eq):

The 170 may also be listed as the 170-EV which has the phono preamp built in and this is currently $559.00. The TD170-1 would not have the added phono preamp at $499.00. There will be a slight price increase on these models expected October 1st.

Thanks for your inquiry,

What's the group wisdom on the best performance/value turntable and cartridge for under, say, $1500 all told (including shipping and taxes)? The use would be mostly personal listening but also some transfer work, especially of test pressings and laquers. Is there a solution that could also accomodate 78RPM and wide-groove disks or is it better to do that with a separate unit?

Interested in various solutions used by members of this group, and thanks in advance for any/all advise and input.
