somewhat related to this question, not an answer, but more of a point i hadn't seen mentioned before. (pardon if it was). google's researchers produced this white paper on hard drive performance/failures. a rather good defense for low-level formatting of any new drive. well, nearby is relative these days, for some situations. i can vouch for John Spencer's company. excellent service and very forward thinking in all aspects.
