The New York Phil was the Lewisohn Stadium Orchestra, Stadium SO, etc., 
throuh, I think, 1951.  The orchestra members were offered seats for the 
summer work (remember, this is before concert halls were air conditioned and 
the summer circuit for string quartets, etc., was still small.)  Many of the 
firsts declined as they had the profile for some of that summer work 
elsewhere.  The Philharmonic thought the summer ensemble did not represent 
them at their best (no wise remarks here, please), especially as the vacant 
chairs were then filled  by Met Opera, Ballet, local classical all-stars, 
good students, etc.  Hence the half-way name.

Post this time a jobber handled the summer concert staffing and was not the 
Philharmonic in any sense, though there were undoubtedly "members of" among 
the players.  As I recall, the new Philharmonic discography omits Stadium 
records as they do not consider the group as theirs.

Use of the Philharmonic's name on a recording required that a fee be payed 
for its use, even if the group was intact.   Otherwise it could be "members 
of the..." or some other fudgy name.

A careful inspection of Ward Botford's Vox productions of "The Strings, " 
The Winds and Brass" (I'm not sure of the actual box titles) reveals a 
little note that identifies the players as belonging to one of Boston's 
better known symphony orchestras.
