Re: [ARSCLIST] help in fair pricing of reel to reel machines

Another thing we've discussed on another list is that you cannot assume any sort of expertise or basic knowledge on the part of the seller. Thus, while it is good practice to remove the capstan motor and send it separately on an old Ampex or Scully deck, for instance, asking a seller disposing of "the estate of a dead audio engineer" to do this will likely render the motor and transport unusable.

My policy has been to only buy tape machines I can go pick up and I long ago stopped commiting to buy (ie I don't do ebay auctions) until I've seen and checked out the machine. Live and learn. My first tape deck, I drove all the way to Cleveland. Got lucky because it was restorable even if it required a donor deck. Last pile I bought was a mere 45 minutes away and the prices were much better for the goldmine of spare parts.

I received a tape deck I'd purchased a few years ago, that
the seller had just wrapped in a blanket and put into a
rather beat-up box. Another one, over 10 years ago, was
in a home made road case with no front - the seller just
taped a piece of cardboard over the front of it. Each
one required major repairs when received and of course the
insurance didn't pay for it. You've got to wonder what
some people are thinking when they ship something that way.
I'm very reticent to buy a piece of equipment from a private
seller now.
