This is a good point. iPod headphones are also ear-damaging the way most kids use them.

For all this background noise and instant acces to things to listen to, I notice a distinct lack of 
listening skills in the world today. It's like people wilfully don't HEAR what they're being told or 
asked.

One thing to note about the smashed/compressed mastering -- as long as it's not all square wave 
distortion, it can be very useful over earbuds in a loud urban setting. A kid could conceivably use 
a lower volume setting, although they don't.
