Seems to me that commercial open reel tapes only began appearing on those reels
when thinner tape became practical..and certainly when some manufacturers began
putting them out at 3.75 ips, so a larger hub would make it look as if more
tape had been used. I certainly remember pre-recorded tapes being on standard
hub 7-inch reels at first. Anyway, I still use those large hub reels and have a
stash of unused ones....an audio repair shop in Toronto may still have a bunch
of them on hand. DL
