This was mainly done for AM radio...whose commercial-content requirements
(ads paid, music didn't...) made 3 or 4 minute singles a necessity. In that
era,
FM stations (and the occasional late-night AM show) made a point of the fact
that they played "album-length versions!" (which were often paired with the
short versions on promo 45's).
