Try cleaning the large internal function  switches with contact cleaner
and check for a broken headwire on the erase and record/playback heads.

If you're lucky one of those  will address it.  Perhaps cleaning the
front panel switches with a plastic safe contact cleaner might be in
order too.
Does the vu meter or bargraph LED indicator show a signal presence even
though the machine doesn't make the recording ? If it does, there is
probably an electronic failure or it might point to a broken headwire or
open head.

That's how I'd start.
