The problem is this: that is one of the top PBS programs because
about a gazillion people wishfully assume that somewhere, in all
the junk they brought back from grandma's house, they have a rare
and valuable antique that will net them many thousands of dollars
(in cash or bragging rights!). Since 99.9% of humans want to raise
their status a little above their neighbours'...they all believe
that THEY are going to be the next one to find the Old Master or
the original Chippendale armoire or whatever.

Same reason they all bought cases of Billy beer, or Beanie Babies
with the "rare puce tag," or whatever else happens to be the
"collectible of choice" this month!
