That looks like the white mold that I found on a whole stack of Super 8mm film that I was recently sent for conversion to DVD. That mold appeared crystaline and looked VERY much like what was in your picture.

In the case of the film, once I touched it I realized it wasn't crystaline. It was oily and slippery. But the similarity to your picture is amazing, so I thought I'd mention it.
