The situations we are discussing are in response to issues regarding the U.S. copyright law. People from other countries, contributing to the thread these issues generate, should always identify the country and country's laws to which they are referring. Otherwise following the thread becomes very confusing.

The recordings may be out of copyright, but the music (in the sense of
what could be printed as sheet music) may not be.

If the music is public domain, then you are in the clear.

And if the music is not p.d., the concept of mandatory license (not
applicable to the recording itself) gives me the right to publish it
upon payment of necessary royalties!
