Re: [ARSCLIST] Little azimuth trick

Hi, Chris,

Tilt or zenith and tangent or wrap are important and yes, we pay
attention to those when installing replacement heads. But azimuth is
one of those annoying things that needs to be adjusted for every
TAPE!...and as I said...you can't fix it in post. You can fix
inter-track delay in post, but you can't fix the comb filtering on
each track in post.

Most head-height adjustments screw up zenith if you don't do it
right. So...I had JRF Magnetics mount a 4-channel 8-track head on a
little elevator that adjusts height a bit so I can cover (by
switching the four tracks) any 21-mil swath on a 1/4 inch tape. I can
also use it to recover 8-track cartridges, though I'll probably leave
it at the top and flip the tape for the other 4 tracks and then flip
the WAV files in the PC. Easier than adjusting height even with this
lovely device.

Another tape restorer, Steve at sonicraft.com played me a tape last
fall that was the before that someone else had restored and then what
he had done with it. It was unbelievable. It was worse than any
"befores" I'd heard up to then. It sounded like someone had cut out
the tweeter and then put the woofer under water.

Cheers,

Richard
