Thank 17K signal sounds like noise from the switching power supply. Have
you check your capacitors lately? My main PSU cap had dried up and blown
the positive leg right off the cap! I will be selling re-cap kits
soon...hopefully. right now I am waiting for my shipment of caps to be
unloaded from some cargo container somewhere...
I have also been tinkering with the possibility of relocating the PSU
to a remote box to help reduce noise. Again if this is something that
people would be interested in. I can take a look at what it would cost
to do.
I have also been discussing with a designer the most economical way to
make an accurate RPM counter for the Sp-15's! It would be accurate to
XX.99 rpm, is there any reason to go to XX.999 rpm? Or would 2 decimal
places be enough for most archivists??
This would be in the form of a small remote box with a digital display
and some type of sensor that would be mounted under the platter. We are
looking into what all is involved. A large part of this will be how many
people would be interested, and what they would be willing to pay for
such a device. Speak up now! 150-300.00 each is likely

It may just be us, but we drill out holes in 78s when necessary. This
has
the additional advantage of being able to center the disks better.
Negative
metal parts like stampers are often **way** off center, and it helps to
open
the holes to center them individually.
It doesn't take long to do this.
Btw, we are getting a steady signal at +/- 17.7kHz on our SP-15 via the
phono cartridge - it's probably part of the quartz/motor drive speed
servo
circuits. It's not audible at the levels it occurs, but it would be more
assuring if it were eliminated with shielding or filtering. We've been
able
to notch it out with a Weiss EQ1-LP.
