RE: arsclist cylinder housing design
South Australian company Albox makes a Polypropylene container for 3 inch
cylinders. It was developed in conjunction with the State Library of SA and
ScreenSound Australia, Canberra.
The original prototype had supports inside the container, but the finished
product does not have any internal intrusions. Instead, ScreenSound advises
the use of a wrap of thin polyester wadding (used in dressmaking) around the
cylinder.
We are interested in commissioning Albox to manufacture boxes for 5 inch
cylinders and would be interested in hearing from other institutions that
could share the start up cost with us, as our 5 inch collection is tiny.
(Our 3 inch collection isn't large, but South Australia was the birth place
of tenor Peter Dawson who began his recording career in London in 1904, so
we have an abiding interest in cylinders.)

Yes, LC did use that design for several years but becuase of the problems
mentioned by David, it is unsuitable for wax cylinders.
