LIGHT PIPING: A NEW LIGHTING SYSTEM FOR MUSEUM CASES
CATHERINE SEASE
ABSTRACT—Utilizing the new technology of prismatic film, Field Museum has devised a system for illuminating exhibit cases. The light piping system has many advantages over traditional lighting systems. As the lighting fixture is not located inside the case, there is much less heat buildup, and the contents of the case are not disturbed when fixtures or light bulbs need maintenance or changing. The light piping system provides exhibit designers with greater flexibility while safeguarding the preservation of the collections on display.
