sodium cyanide

A salt (NaCN), usually prepared by reacting methane with hydrogen cyanide, followed by neutralization with sodium hydroxide, or by passing carbon monoxide and ammonia over finely divided sodium carbonate at 600 to 650° C. It has been used to some extent as a (powerful) sharpening agent in lime liquors; however, its extremely toxic nature makes it dangerous to use. (363 )
