printed paper warehouse

The area in which printed sheets are stored while awaiting instructions for binding. In book printing, it is not unusual for a number of printed sheets to be left unbound, so as to avoid the additional expense of binding (and costs of inventorying) if the full quantity of books should not be required. Printed sheets were stored from an early date by their printers, and later by booksellers. There were professional warehousemen who were employed sometimes by several booksellers to store their sheets. Usually they were stored unfolded, but there are many indications that they were sometimes stored folded and gathered. (58 )
