Philadelphia patent-back guard

A heavy cloth guard to which a folio of a large blankbook is sewn before being sewn to webbings. It is used mainly where the sewing must have greater flexibility than that afforded by sewing on webbings alone. It also contributes considerably to the strength of the sewing.
