phloroglucinol ( phloroglucin stain )

A sweet, crystalline phenol (C 6 H 3 (OH) 3 ) used in conjunction with hydrochloric acid and alcohol as a test solution to detect the presence of mechanical wood pulp in paper, which it turns red. It has no advantage over the HERTZBERG STAIN other than that it can be applied directly to the paper. (143 )
