laid lines
The closely spaced watermark lines in LAID PAPER , produced
by the laid wires of the MOLD (1) in handmade
paper, or by the DANDY
ROLL of the papermaking machine. Laid lines
usually run parallel to the long side of a sheet
of handmade paper and across the grain of
machine-made paper; however, SPIRAL LAID paper has
lines parallel with the grain. Also called "wire
lines" or "wire marks," as opposed to CHAIN LINES (1) .
