laid lines

The closely spaced watermark lines in LAID PAPER , produced by the laid wires of the MOLD (1) in handmade paper, or by the DANDY ROLL of the papermaking machine. Laid lines usually run parallel to the long side of a sheet of handmade paper and across the grain of machine-made paper; however, SPIRAL LAID paper has lines parallel with the grain. Also called "wire lines" or "wire marks," as opposed to CHAIN LINES (1) .
