Use of biocide in textile storage areas

Dear Listserv Members,

Following (happily) minor flooding in our rolled textile storage area, our Physical Plant director has proposed treating the mildewed wall surface behind the (wooden) storage racks where the flood originated in the following way: “The preferred chemicals are a biocide and maybe some chlorine bleach that would be wiped over the areas where the mold is present. After treatment, we want to paint the areas with a water based primer and paint that is resistant to mold.”

The biocide that he proposes to use is called “Enzymatic,” manufactured by Butcher’s. According to the manufacturer, it is a “deodorizer, digester, and spotter,” with “multi-strain bacterial action.”

None of the chemicals would come in direct contact with the textiles; however, they would be used in a fairly small space, and we would be unable to remove the textiles entirely from this area during treatment.  I would appreciate any feedback that listserv members might have on the proposed treatment, and thank you in advance for your help!
