NATCC Announcement

The North American Textile Conservation Conference (NATCC) is pleased to announce the award of a grant from the Getty Foundation, a program of the J. Paul Getty Trust in Los Angeles, to provide financial support for 45 textile conservators from South and Central America to attend the fifth biennial NATCC meeting, “Recovering the Past: The Conservation of Archaeological and Ethnographic Textiles,” November 9-11, 2005 in Mexico City, Mexico.  The grant will cover the costs of registration and round-trip, economy-class airfare.

Recovering the Past” will focus on the conservation, research, diffusion, and exhibition of archaeological and ethnographic textiles. The conference is co-sponsored by Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia and is dedicated to Irmgard W. Johnson, who has worked for over fifty years to research, rescue and preserve the textile designs of several ethnic groups of Mexico.

The NATCC meeting in Mexico City includes 22 papers and 15 posters.  The paper and poster presenters will come from 15 countries, including 8 from Mexico and 5 from South American countries.  About half the papers will be given in Spanish and half in English; with simultaneous translation will be provided. The preprints for the conference will also be printed in English and Spanish, with English, Spanish, and French abstracts.  As in past years, the conference will also feature workshops and tours.

The NATCC program is designed so participants can learn both formally, through the papers and posters presented, and informally, by discussions of papers in question-and-answer sessions, meeting with poster presenters, and in discussions with colleagues during breaks, lunches and tours.  The conference size (about 200 - 250 participants) and specific focus on conservation of archaeological and ethnographic textiles will also help to facilitate interchanges of ideas and knowledge among the participants.

Conservators and conservation students who are citizens of and living in South and Central American and Caribbean countries may apply for Getty funded support for the NATCC 2005 meeting.  (NATCC also has funds available for registration support for textile conservation students and textile conservators who cannot receive any institutional support to attend the meeting.) Applications for support will be reviewed and ranked by a selection committee; selection criteria will be based on professional standing, need, and capability and willingness to disseminate information from the conference to colleagues after the conference.    Applications for Getty and NATCC funded support are due September 1, 2005.  To obtain an application form and for more information on financial aid, contact: Emilia Cortes, paramodepisba56@xxxxxxxxx, or c/o Textile Conservation, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY  10028, USA.
